Bad Bunny and his Grammy

   I was scanning one of those social media posts about the various generations — The Greatest, Baby Boomers, Millennials, Gen X, Gen Z … — and wondered what mine was and, heck, where it was. Turns out I’m part of the Silent Generation.

     Who knew? Did I miss the memo that I was supposed to focus on my career and hold my tongue for 84 years? Well, live and learn.

      I guess being born into the war years and inheriting the prosperity that came with victory was supposed to make us care only about ice cream sodas and eventually rock and roll. Not a bad deal, but honestly, I gotta say I think we’ve also been pretty vocal about race, Vietnam, Iraq, gay rights, women’s rights, sports betting … etcetera. Life.

    So, in the spirit of the not so silent generation and because as a journalist I’ve unknowingly been violating my generation’s assigned code for 60 years, I’d just like to comment on two recent events. 

    — Don Lemon and three other black journalists were arrested for charges brought against them while covering a demonstration in Minnesota against ICE. In a church. He’s accused of preventing people from exercising their right to religious freedom. The demonstrators were protesting against the church minister for his cooperation with ICE. The demonstration and Lemon’s press coverage were both protected by the First Amendment guarantees of free speech and a free press. Not negotiable. 

    Attorney General Pam Bondi couldn’t find a legal way to arrest Lemon (a judge refused to issue a warrant), so she slapped together a secret grand jury and, undoubtedly, lied.

  This gestapo-like policing to arrest journalists who have been critical of Bondi’s boss is what the Greatest Generation — my parents’ generation — fought to eliminate. No American of any generation should support it. None. Ever.

    — Someone named Bad Bunny is the lead act at halftime of Sunday’s Super Bowl. Full disclosure: Who?

     No, I never heard of the performer until the NFL announced his selection. Then he just won the Grammy for best album of the year. And then, he tore Donald Trump a new one in his acceptance speech live on TV, denouncing ICE tactics and saying the violence is not who we are as human beings. 

     Bad Bunny also happens to be Puerto Rican. Trump hit the roof, typically insulting everything about Bad Bunny and saying he won’t watch the Super Bowl. Who cares?

     I’m now probably going to watch the half time show to see what all the fuss is about. It will be in Spanish. I suspect I won’t be crazy about the music, since I grew up with the crooners and then the rockers and the jazz giants and the folk story tellers. (Great times). But I’ll watch.

     Bottom line?

— Pam Bondi: Bad.ii

— Bad Bunny: Good. (Although I’m still not a fan of the name.)

 Catching up after snowmageddon with a cautious sense of optimism that America has finally awakened to the moral rot festering at the core of its existence. The sad thing is it took the murder of two innocent American citizens in broad daylight on the streets of one of the nation’s leading cities by agents of the federal government — and the subsequent clumsy attempt by government officials to place blame for their deaths on the victims themselves — to arouse this awakening.   

   That to me is the real problem. The malaise, the laziness, the apathy, the entitlement, the irresponsibility, the selfishness, the fear, the lack of awareness and, bluntly, sometimes the utter stupidity on the part of millions of Americans that has allowed the likes of Donald Trump and his coterie of greedy, amoral, bigoted, lying vermin to turn this nation into a festering pool of anger and violence that keeps putting money in their bank accounts.

   Too harsh? It’s not for nothing that Trump once said, “I love the poorly educated.”

    The truth is, without the votes of millions of Americans who know and care nothing about how government works and were enthralled by the phony persona of a TV pitchman and the millions of non-votes by Americans who think that “all politicians are alike“ and don’t understand that the freedom and other benefits they enjoy by living in this country depends on their participation, Trump and his mob would not be in power. He’d probably be in prison.

    And Renee Good and Alex Pretti would likely be alive.

    The shooting deaths of the two Minneapolis residents by ICE agents were captured on video by bystanders. They showed clearly that neither one of the victims did anything to provoke or threaten the ICE goons. Yet the Trump administration immediately targeted both victims as terrorists and threats to their killers.

    This time, however, the lies backfired. Thanks to cell phones and social media, people, even the true Trump believers, could see for themselves what happened. Heck, even the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post could see it. Two American citizens were shot dead in the streets by federal agents who are poorly trained at best and were likely lured to apply for the job by a $50,000 signing bonus and the opportunity to wear all kinds of military gear, a mask and a badge and the freedom to shove and threaten, kidnap and beat people at will without regard to their safety, much less the law. Even a couple of Republican lawmakers noticed.

   So things are calmed down in Minneapolis for now, Democrats are threatening to cut off funding for ICE and a lot of Americans suddenly realized it wasn’t only “immigrants“ who should be wary of the government.

   But as Trump typically backpedals when his bluster and BS don’t work, what happens now? Will demonstrations against ICE continue around the country? Will Republican lawmakers be held accountable for allowing a clearly cognitively declining Trump to continue his assault on America? Will ICE be abolished? Will Kristi Noem be fired? 

     A few years back another Minneapolis resident, George Floyd, was killed by agents of the government – Minneapolis police. The Black Lives Matter movement came and went, but not before prompting a Blue Lives Matter reaction. Unlike the thousands of non-white, Spanish-speaking immigrants and those of other nationalities who are lawfully in this country or at least leading a productive, law-abiding life and have been kidnapped and locked up by ICE, Renee Good and Alex Pretti were white, non-immigrant, English-speaking American citizens. Americans are in revolt.

     Coincidence?

     We’ll find out soon enough if this is a true moment of moral clarity for America or just more of the same selective attitude towards that “All men are created equal” line we like to brag about.

     Honestly, sticking with my cautious optimism and acknowledging the law of unintended consequences, sometimes it takes the wrong motivation to realize the right outcome. In this case, I can live with that. It’s a lesson America would be much better off for learning.

   I’ve watched the video countless times. Masked ICE agents rush up to a woman in a car in a residential area of Minneapolis and start screaming at her. The woman backs up to avoid the agent in front of her car. She then turns right to further avoid him and drive away. He steps clear of the car and fires his gun several times through the windshield. Someone yells, “What the f:;&k!?” The car crashes a short way from the shooting. The agent leaves the scene quickly and his buddies keep someone who says he’s a doctor from attending to the driver. End of story.

    The woman, who died at the hospital, was a 37-year-old mother of three, a poet, not a terrorist, an American citizen minding her own business.

    The next day, Kristi Noem, the fake-faced woman head of Homeland Security, blamed the woman for her death, said she tried to run over the agent. Said the agent was resting with his family after the ordeal. Trump said it was a miracle the guy was still walking around after the traumatic incident at the hands of a raging leftwing terrorist.

     They lied. We all saw the video. They lied. JD Vance took his turn. He lied. Blamed the victim whose children now have no mother. He lied. They lied. They lied. They lied. They lied. They lied. They lied. They lied. It’s what they do. They lied.

    Pam Bondi, the Attorney General who lies for Trump, says the FBI will investigate. It will not allow Minnesota police officials to be part of the investigation. Why? She is handing the job to Kash Patel, YouTube host turned FBI director. He has lied every day since he has held that title.

    They lie. They lie, they lie, they lie, they lie, they lie, they lie, they lie. They have always lied because enough people believed them. And so they will continue to lie. Trump lies, Noem lies, Bondi lies, Vance lies, Patel lies, they all lie.

    Her name was Renee Nicole Good. She died and your government killed her, then they lied.

    They lied, they lied, they lied, they lied, they lied, they lied, they lied. It’s all they ever do. We saw the video. They lied.

     At this point, it gives me no joy to say if you still believe them, you’re either a fool or you are them. There is simply no other choice. That’s no lie.

The Rapture

    The note on my phone consisted of just three words: “A reasonable Rapture.”

     They were the result of venturing out of the house and out of my own mind to have coffee with a friend. I think they call it a conversation.

      I’m often amazed at what comes out of my mouth when I leave my mind behind. But this, the more I looked at it, it started to make sense.

       What is a reasonable Rapture? I asked myself. Or, more accurately, what would a reasonable Rapture look like if there was ever to be one? Well, that certainly stirs the creative juices.

        The traditional view of the Rapture among some evangelical Christians is that Jesus will return to “catch up” living believers to meet him in the air, while dead believers will be resurrected to join him. The rest of us non-believers will be left behind to deal with the Tribulations.

        Most Christian denominations do not ascribe to this view and the term “Rapture” is not specifically mentioned in the Bible. However, many American evangelicals do believe in it and the concept has been the subject of several books and movies.

        So what would a reasonable Rapture be for me? Being a non-believer in this particular case, I start by assuming I’m part of the left behind crowd. The ones who discover empty clothes lying on the ground where their loved ones or nosy neighbors used to be. It could be a little freaky. No goodbye note, no text, just a pile of laundry.

        In my case, it would be reasonable to believe that my loved ones and a fair amount of my friends would also still be here, scratching their heads, wondering where all the other people went.

        Then, one of the more informed would remember seeing a social media post about some evangelicals who believed in something called the Rapture. Up in the sky. Goodbye. Someone else would remember reading the book or seeing the movie “Left Behind.”

        Well, OK then. Let’s see who’s still here. Seeing as the evangelicals who were believers were also big Trump fans, we could assume that a lot of the MAGA crowd were, uh, gone.

         That’s good. Stress level on the planet should fall by about 50%. That’s reasonable. But what about the Tribulations? Trump would still be around because, for all his kissing up to the evangelicals, everything about him is a big lie. No Rapture for him.

       But wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that, with all his followers up in the sky flying to their just reward, he would be a cult leader without a cult? That should clear the way for impeachment proceedings in Congress, conviction, arrests on various felony charges, including those connected with the Epstein files, and humiliation on the world stage. Other than Stephen Miller, Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem and Pete Hegseth, who would care? 

    That would leave us with JD Vance as president, which is no prize, but still better than Trump. Vance has zero personality and, with most of MAGA gone, no real following. As someone who has shown he is more than willing to change his opinion and politics and résumé to save his career, he might be more than willing to do so to save his soul. Sounds reasonable and it would give him a great story for his second novel.

     Whatever, he would just be a short term fill-in while political leaders of both parties (but especially Republicans) in this country. start thinking about ways to work together again. I mean, wouldn’t that be a reasonable message from a Rapture?

     The ICE workers, most of whom would likely still be here, could be reassigned to going around the country and picking up all the laundry lying in the streets as part of their prison work release program.

     While we’re at it, those of us left behind might be shook up enough by the Rapture to look around and see other things that needed changing. Like maybe getting rid of the whole health insurance industry and creating Medicare for all in America. Caring more for each other. That seems like a reasonable reaction to a Rapture to me. Maybe a woman president, too.

     I don’t know; I’m still working on this. Have to make another date for coffee. It’s interesting what you can come up with when you apply reason to religion.

— He is tearing down the East Wing of the White House, after saying he would not, to build a garish ballroom. Republicans say nothing.

— He is using our military to murder people on the high seas, in the name of fighting drugs, with no evidence offered of any wrongdoing. Republicans say nothing.

— He is using ICE as a  violent private army to kidnap people off the streets of American cities in the guise of fighting illegal immigration, locking them up in private prisons with no charges filed or sending them to other countries. Republicans say nothing.

— He is three weeks into a government shutdown, with federal employees going unpaid and services curtailed, having made no attempt to reach a budget compromise with Democrats. Republicans say nothing.

— He has scared House Speaker Mike Johnson into keeping the House out of session to work on a budget that will not cause millions of Americans to lose their health insurance because that would also require Johnson to swear in a new Democratic representative, who would be a deciding vote to require release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, which are believed to contain the names of prominent figures (including his) involved in a worldwide sex-trafficking scandal involving teenaged girls. Three Republicans complained.

— He has ordered federal prosecution of persons who he feels have disrespected him in word, in print or in court, offering none or flimsy excuses for evidence of wrongdoing. An enemies list. Republicans say nothing.

— He is ordering the National Guard into American cities governed by Democrats, over the opposition of governors,  while claiming crime is rampant when it is not and ignoring judicial rulings to cease. The Guardsmen are used as stage props. Republicans say nothing.

— He is suing the news media for daring to report the truth and seeking exorbitant sums to settle the suits as a way of silencing the press. Republicans say nothing.

— He is demanding payments from colleges for admission policies and courses which recognize the wide spectrum of people living in this country, as well as its history. Republicans say nothing.

— He is asking the Justice Department, which he has seeded with sycophants and lackeys and inexperienced lawyers, to pay him $230 million restitution for being the subject of several investigations and indictments, which ceased when he became president. Republicans say nothing.

— He has made enemies of America’s traditional allies, such as NATO, Canada and Mexico, through insults and accusations, while cozying up to Vladimir Putin of Russia and other authoritarian leaders. Republicans say nothing.

— He has filled his cabinet with the worst collection of incompetent, publicity seeking misfits in the history of the country. Planes are colliding; people are getting measles again. Republicans say nothing.

— He has played games with tariffs, imposing and threatening huge ones against various countries, disrupting trade, raising the price on imported goods, increasing supermarket shopping costs and causing hardship to farmers already hurting because of the kidnapping of their workers and undoubtedly resulting in profits to family and close associates who know ahead of time when he’s going to change his mind on a tariff and cause some stock to soar or sink because of his illegal market manipulation. Republicans say nothing.

— He pardoned the January 6 rioters, who lay waste to the nation’s Capitol over his false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Republicans say nothing.

— He has hawked watches, sneakers, bitcoin and coins with his name on it, held invitation-only dinners for ultra-wealthy influence seekers and accepted a jet from Qatar, which will cost a fortune to refurbish to use as president and as his personal aircraft in civilian life, all in violation of the law forbidding the office holder from profiting off the presidency. Republicans say nothing.

— He is talking about having a coin minted with his image on it (illegal) and maybe building a triumphal arch honoring him in Washington, D.C. Republicans say nothing.

— He acknowledged the No Kings Day demonstrations, as more than 7 million Americans took to the streets for peaceful protest against all of the above, with a social media post using an AI-generated video showing him as a royal ruler flying over the demonstrators and defecating on them. I repeat: Defecating on them. American citizens. Mikey Johnson called it “satire.” Other Republicans say nothing.

— He plays golf virtually every weekend, displays no working knowledge of math, science, history or how government works, lacks empathy, can’t remember who’s the leader of which country, is unable to give a speech without descending into disconnected sentences of self-glorification and lies about virtually everything, including being shot. Republicans say nothing.

   OK, that’s it. I’m exhausted and that’s only off the top of my head without doing any research.

   Here’s the point: There are elections coming up very soon for state, county, town  and city officials across the country. I have been an independent voter my entire adult life. I voted for whomever I thought was the best candidate for the job. The last few years, my decisions have been simplified. I simply vote for the Democrat. Or, put another way, I never vote for the Republican.

      They have sat by, mostly silently, while this man has laid a wrecking ball to our nation. To our ideals. To our reputation. To our heritage. To our sense of community. To our self-respect.

   Whether it be out of fear or pure complicity, at this point it doesn’t matter anymore. Their silence defines them. They are him.

   I will vote for and/or publicly commend the first local Republican official whom I am aware of speaking critically of him publicly. But it’s been 10 years and I’m still waiting. And I’m not holding my breath.

    Republicans need not say anything.

Zohran Mamdani

  Mamdani’s his name. Remember it. Get it right. Two ‘m’s and then an ‘n.’ Next mayor of New York City. His first name is Zohran.

    This all needs a little explaining.

     Given a choice in the June primary of Andrew Cuomo, a former governor who had resigned in disgrace because of numerous accusations of sexual misconduct, and Eric Adams, a mayor whose administration was awash in corruption and who personally had federal bribery and corruption charges against him dropped by the Trump administration in exchange for a promise to cooperate with the ICE roundup of anyone who looks suspiciously Hispanic, New York City Democrats chose a young, Ugandan-born Democratic Socialist, Muslim, naturalized citizen, state legislator as their candidate for mayor.

    Zohran Mamdani.

    It wasn’t close and it wasn’t strictly by default. A bright, personable 33-year-old who has mastered social media skills, Mamdani also clearly had a message that resonated with New Yorkers who are finding it increasingly difficult to afford to live in the city they love.

    While Cuomo and Adams talked about their experience in government, Mamdani spoke of free bus service and free child care for children between six weeks and five years old and “baby baskets” for new parents that would include educational resources as well as diapers and baby wipes.

  He talked of a city-owned grocery store in each borough. The stores would operate on city-owned land or in city buildings, buy food wholesale and be exempt from property taxes, which would keep the cost of the food down.

    He said he would freeze rents for nearly one million New Yorkers by strategic appointments to the board which decides on increases for rent-stabilized apartments. He also promised to triple the number of available affordable housing units, with 200,000 new homes to be built over the next decade.

    You get the picture. He talked to New Yorkers about things that were really bothering them and offered a plan to pay for it all.

   Mamdani said he would raise the corporate tax rate to 11.5 percent, which he says will bring in an additional $5 billion. And, he plans a 2 percent tax on the wealthiest 1 percent of New Yorkers.

    Cuomo called Mamdani’s plans “unrealistic.“ So did the wealthy city dwellers and corporations, not to mention old guard Democratic politicians who depend on their campaign contributions. After Mamdani’s surprise victory, big money began pouring into Cuomo’s now independent campaign for mayor. They also desperately began looking for a candidate who wasn’t a – gasp! – socialist.

    In fact, establishment Democrats sounded just like typical Republicans and that’s a terrible thing for a politician in New York City and much of the country these days. Dismissing progressive ideas as too left, too radical and looking for the comfortable middle of the road, in the process offering nothing to contrast with today’s devastating Republican scorched-earth agenda, is a recipe for loss. The status quo is a no go.

    To be clear, Mamdani is a Democrat who shares the same Democratic Socialist values as Bernie Sanders, a Brooklyn boy: Tax people fairly according to their wealth for the greater good of all people. Make New York City a great place to live and work and raise a family even if you’re not super wealthy. A democracy for everyone. It’s not communism; it’s not socialism. Today, in the age of ever greater corporate power, it’s realism.

      Apparently, a lot of registered Democratic voters agree. They don’t want used or tainted goods. Since Democrats far outnumber Republicans in the city, the Democratic candidate is always heavily favored to win.

   The Republican candidate, staging a reprise of his 2021 losing campaign, is Curtis Sliwa. I honestly didn’t even know he was still around. Sliwa, now 73, is a founder of the once upon a time, Guardian Angels, who patrolled the streets of the city in the 1980s, purporting to reduce crime. Sliwa later admitted to faking some “crimes“ they had “prevented.” He also escaped a kidnapping and apparent assassination attempt by John Gotti Jr., who was charged, but not convicted after three trials. Gotti Senior apparently didn’t like something Sliwa said about him.

     Like everyone else these days, Sliwa has a podcast and, I guess, describes himself as a citizen activist. He was unopposed for the Republican nomination for mayor so you can see why Democrats are favored to win. Unless they sabotage themselves, which they have been known to do.

      The Democratic establishment quickly branded Mamdani too far left to win. Even though he just won. Even though he is young, smart and speaks his mind. Even though he may have given city voters yet another convincing reason to vote for him.

      In a direct rebuke to the Adams/Trump deal, Mamdani says New York City should strengthen its sanctuary city laws and promises to bar Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers from city facilities. Polls say that most Americans, never mind just New York City residents, would support this approach.

     Mamdani. Get it right. Next mayor of New York City.

I didn’t get one.

This will be short and maybe a little personal because it’s Monday and it’s hot and buggy outside and I’m still brooding over not being invited to the Bezos wedding in Venice.

I mean, yeah, it was ostentatious and not that I would’ve known how to socialize with Oprah, the Kardashians, Tom Brady, Bill Gates and a bunch of influencers I never heard of, but I don’t cause trouble, I do have Amazon Prime and it would’ve been nice to see Venice.

It certainly would’ve been more fun than following the daily doings of Trump and the dumpster fire that is the Republican Party in the Congress. The big story of course is this big, awful budget bill that Trump wants passed in one shot, instead of holding hearings on budget proposals from various departments the way Congress usually does it. Get all the lies in one basket, pass it and go home. That’s the plan.

So far, it’s not working because it’s such a cruel bill, skewed to take from the poor and give to the rich that even a few Republicans have had to say so. There’s several thousand inches of copy on it in The New York Times if you want to know all the details. Basically, poor people lose healthcare and very rich people get very richer and ICE gets to build a big special prison all its own.

All it needs is a couple more Republican senators with a bare minimum of decency to kill it, but so far there don’t seem to be any. The Trumper likes holidays, so he wants the bill passed by July 4 so he can celebrate. He’ll probably invite Bezos for a big Mac.

Oh yeah, the prison that ICE would get to build, Trump and the MaGAs would no doubt love to use as a new home for Zohran Mamdani, the Muslim Democratic Socialist who just won the Democratic primary for mayor in New York City. Trump‘s already called him a communist. A Republican senator suggested he was a terrorist. The president’s press secretary suggested he might be worth investigating since he’s a naturalized citizen. I’m surprised the men in the masks haven’t already shown up.

This is not how I like to start my week. I mean, I would’ve gone out and rented a tux if Bezos had invited me.

That loud sound of the very ground being torn apart on the East Coast was the political equivalent of an earthquake.

Tuesday, Democrats in New York City chose a Muslim Indian born in Africa to be their party’s candidate for mayor over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. Oh, and the chosen candidate, a naturalized citizen, is a Democratic Socialist.

Go ahead. Read that again. I’ll wait.

Zohran Mamdani, a little-known state assemblyman from Queens, shocked the political world and scared the pants off wealthy backers of Cuomo and Adams as well as many city businesses, who feared Mamdani’s basic platform issue of higher taxes on them and a lower cost of living for city residents.

Blasphemy! they cried. Communist! the MAGAs bellowed. Holy crap! Democratic leaders gulped.

Indeed, in a city where being a Democrat almost always guarantees being elected mayor, Mamdami’s victory left many of those so-called Democratic leaders befuddled in the middle, still looking for a way to fight Donald Trump and his MAGA cult without jeopardizing their own political status.

It might be just the earthquake the Democratic Party needed.

Clearly, the victory was a major rebuke to the Democratic establishment. Apparently, enough voters were finally fed up with overlooking the sins of the chosen political elite and allowing them to just move along as if nothing in their past really mattered when it came time to vote. This time, it apparently did matter.

Cuomo talked a lot about crime, which is actually down in the city. He ran a largely lackluster campaign based on his name recognition and the fact that he was a city boy from Queens who once was governor and so presumably knew best what was best for New Yorkers.

This required voters to overlook the fact that he was forced to resign as governor because of numerous allegations — by staff and other women — of sexual misconduct. He denied the charges, but the state attorney general was investigating him.

There was also his mishandling of the Covid crisis when he ordered elderly patients in overcrowded hospitals to be sent to nursing homes, where they received a lower level of care. Many died.

Plus, he was generally regarded as a bully.

None of this stopped him from running for mayor. I guess he needed the job.

For his part, the Adams administration has been a public relations disaster, marked by an almost weekly resignation by some top aide for questionable behavior.

Adams himself faced federal charges of taking illegal campaign contributions, but the Trump Justice Department, ever looking for some quid pro quo, agreed to drop the charges in exchange for Adams cooperating with ICE rounding up immigrants, or whomever, on city streets.

Apparently, that’s not exactly the way to win the hearts or votes of New Yorkers.

The big money people are rallying behind Cuomo and Adams, letting them know that the funds will be there if they want to run as independent candidates in November. Because, what do thousands of New York City Democrats know about what’s good for them? Also, that thing about higher taxes on rich people, free buses and affordable supermarkets.

Of course, Mamdani being Muslim, there are also the inevitable slurs, and fear-mongering about terrorism and accusations of anti-semitism.

For his part, he has pledged to step up efforts to combat antisemitism in the city. He says his argument is with Israeli President Bibi Netanyahu and some of his military policies, not with the Jewish people. A distinction some can’t, or refuse to, understand.

In any event, Mamdani on the East Coast shook up a static Democratic establishment by appealing directly to the people in plain language about everyday problems. Kind of like Bernie Sanders, another Democratic Socialist, did in 2016, when Democrats went for the establishment presidential candidate.

On the West Coast, a member of the Democratic establishment, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, recently struck a nerve in a somewhat moribund Democratic Party by taking on Donald Trump in plain, blunt language over ICE kidnappings in Los Angeles. Basically, calling a bully a bully, a liar a liar. Come and get me.

Polls showed a lot of Americans, not just Democrats, like Newsom‘s message.

Now, if Democrats can take off the gloves and go coast-to-coast with a message most Americans can understand and agree with, they might be able to put the fear of God (losing elections) into enough Republicans to stop the Trump onslaught on democracy and the rule of law while there’s still a country worth saving.

Start spreading the news: When New Yorkers say, “Hey, enough’s enough! Get oudda here!” it’s worth paying attention.

   Since there are thousands of concerned citizens monitoring and reporting on the daily doings of Trump 2: The Revenge, I thought I’d give the White House crew a chance to get their feet re-wet (is that a word?) before checking in and issuing a report. Also, it helps preserve my sanity.

   In any event, here’s a quick summary of Team Trump’s nearly a fortnight back in business:

   — Ukraine. The war is still raging despite Trump’s boast he would end it the day he got elected.

  — The price of eggs. Rather than falling, as Trump promised voters, they have risen. No sign of falling. Gas prices are up, too. Fruits and vegetables are likely to follow with the promised mass deportation of migrant farm workers.

  — Deportations. ICE agents arrested some American citizens and non-criminal immigrants in initial efforts of the pledge to detain and deport criminal undocumented immigrants. Without warrants in some cases. Mexico refused to allow a U. S. military plane carrying undocumented immigrants to land. Inappropriate, its president said. So did Colombia, but its president agreed when Trump agreed not to use military planes, only after his threat of tariffs on Colombian goods failed. Trump said he would use Guantanamo as a mass holding facility (concentration camp) for undocumented immigrants.

  — The budget. An executive order to freeze virtually all federal funding already approved by Congress caused mass confusion nationwide, besides being illegal. Congress was flooded with calls. Lawsuits were filed. Non-profits scrambled. The order was rescinded the next day over the protests of Trump advisor Stephen Miller.

  — Greenland. Denmark says it’s still not for sale.

  — Cabinet. Vice President Vance cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate to approve TV personality Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense, despite reports of his drinking, womanizing and lack of experience for the position. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for health secretary, displayed no knowledge of how Medicare and Medicaid work. And his cousin, Caroline, called him a predator who has consistently sought to profit from the assassinations of his father and uncle.

  — Condoms. Trump’s new press secretary said her boss’s new quasi Department of Government Efficiency had stopped the shipment of $50 million in condoms to Gaza, which Fox News said were to be used by Hamas to make mini-bombs. This never happened. Government accountants said $50 million would buy one billion condoms.

  — Pardons. Three insurrectionists were re-arrested two days after their release from prison. Two others refused the pardons, saying we saw what we saw on television.

   — DEI, staffing, etc. Trump fired the female head of the Coast Guard, the FAA director, froze hiring of air traffic controllers, disbanded the Aviation Safety Advisory Committee, illegally fired all inspectors general and encouraged all federal employees to consider retirement or a job buyout, similar to the one his buddy/advisor/neo-nazi Elon Musk offered and reneged on at Twitter/X.

   — DEI, part 2. An army helicopter collided late at night with a passenger jet on path to land at Reagan National Airport outside Washington, D.C. The two aircraft landed in the Potomac River. The FAA said 67 people were killed, the largest air traffic fatality in the country in 16 years. Trump (see above firings, etc.), without proof, blamed the crash on DEI (diversity, equality, inclusion) policies in the Biden administration that allowed hiring of “those who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions,” including people with hearing and vision issues as well as paralysis, epilepsy and “dwarfism.” Questioned repeatedly for specific roof of these allegations by reporters, he said he based his opinion on “common sense.”

   — DEI, part 3.  The FAA said staffing at the air traffic control tower was “not normal.” One controller was handling the job of two and the helicopter was off course.

  —  DEI, etc. While Trump blamed Biden, the nation mourned.

  Can’t wait for the next nearly a fortnight.
