The editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page chose a misogynistic, homophobic, arch conservative to write an insulting hit job on Dr. Jill Biden, for having the temerity to earn a doctorate in education and not hiding the fact. Why do conservatives have such an inferiority complex when it comes to education? Or is it all an act?

“One drink won’t hurt you” is a dangerously ill-informed reply. The same goes for, “A few butter cookies won’t hurt. C’mon, it’s Christmas.” Or, “Get the dress, Put it on your credit card. You’ll feel better.” Not really.

What is it with Americans — especially a lot of Republicans — who won’t wear a mask? It’s the easiest and best way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, along with proper social distancing. If everybody does it, fewer people get it, fewer people die, the sooner we can go back to work and we don’t have to wear masks. That’s not even new math. It’s just common sense and decency.

Maybe there’s a message in the monoliths. Maybe the universe is tired of waiting for us to figure things out. Maybe it would like us to lower the entropy: Stop killing yourselves and your planet, earthlings. We are all in this together. Maybe we need to pay better attention.

I was called an old coot recently. I can’t change my age. It’s the old coot label I object to and the assumption that comes with it that this is a person not to be taken seriously because he’s old. He’ll be fine. Help him find his slippers. It’s insulting. Labels are risky business.

Our education system has a lot of work to do to repair the damage done in recent years. Encouraging reading is a good place to start. Books are available as never before online. And there’s plenty of time to read.
