Prologue

I wrote the column below on Oct. 20, 2016. It appeared on zestoforange. It’s still here. It was obviously written out of frustration and anger and I’m reposting it here out of frustration and anger that, nearly 10 years later, there are people in this country who still think the Republican Party has any moral standing as a legitimate political party. Even after that craven display of cowardly behavior at the State of the Union. Despite the continued Epstein coverup. Trump is Trump. He’s always been the same. Republicans picked him. He has been the death of them. Millions of Americans voted for him simply because he represented one of our two major political parties. Others believed his lies. Many, sorry to say, agreed with his brand of bigotry. Then they did it again. Even after four years of chaos. Yet people still give Republicans a pass for making this vile, now demented, man their leader. He in turn remade them in his image. Finally, one of those shouting TV commentators actually said the other day that Republicans are letting Trump destroy our country. It started 10 years ago, people, when Trump destroyed them.

That’s all. I’ve had it. I am through with writing about what a sick, repugnant human being Donald Trump is and then watching him reach a new low. Those who know about recovery from addiction, a subject on which I write regularly, say that every bottom has a trapdoor. Trump is living proof of that. Yet, with each new bottom, every poll seems to find 40 percent of those surveyed favoring him for president.

A few days ago, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to give people a reason to vote for Hillary Clinton, rather than against Trump. I stopped writing in mid-column because it seemed to be a waste of time. Who was I going to convince?

Here’s as far as I got …

There I was, having breakfast and rummaging around in my mind to find an angle for this presidential campaign other than don’t vote for Donald Trump because he’s an ignorant, racist, bigoted, misogynistic, cruel, vindictive, vile, narcissistic, xenophobic, quick-tempered, undisciplined, untrustworthy, uninformed, unspeakably crude sexual pervert and birther, who lies as naturally as he breathes.

Somehow, writing that message week after week (me and plenty of others) still hadn’t convinced a lot of people that the only vote that makes sense on Nov. 8 is one for Hillary Clinton. You don’t have to like her, folks, just know that that the future of this nation may well depend on voting for her.

Deaf ears. “Yeah, Trump may be all those things,” comes the unconvincing shrug, “but I can’t vote for her.” I have given up asking for reasons why. You know, reasons based on actual facts that would outweigh the choice at hand.

I set aside a newspaper article about how Trump had managed to actually make insulting comments about Clinton’s body as part of his defense against multiple charges that he is a sexual predator. Instead, I tried to focus on my egg white omelette (Swiss cheese and tomatoes). Then, as fate (or my excellent hearing) would have it, the angle was delivered to me from a nearby table. A reason to vote for Hillary … not that it was presented that way.

“DId you hear that Putin said if Clinton is elected, be prepared for war?”

The point the gentleman was making to his friend was that voting for Clinton would be dangerous because it could mean getting into a war with Russia. This was delivered in all seriousness because Vladimir Putin had said so and, as we know, he always speaks the truth and never has any nefarious plot in mind because that’s the way former heads of the KGB comport themselves when they get elected president of Russia.

The further point would be that voting for Trump would be smart because Putin says nice things about him. And Trump says he’d like to work with Putin.

So there you have it, America, the Republican candidate for president of the United States is now being touted as the better choice because the president of Russia doesn’t like the other candidate. Does this seem backwards to anyone else? When did being pals with Putin all of a sudden become more important than standing up to the Kremlin? When Trump launched his campaign based on lies and fear, that’s when.

Trump, of course, has said that he has met Putin. He has also said that he has not met Putin. You can be sure that Clinton and Putin know each other well. And he apparently does hate her guts. (I’m liking this reason for voting for her even more now.) That’s because, as secretary of state, she publicly called him out on stealing his election, something which Trump has accused Clinton of trying to do. She stood up to Putin. Meanwhile, Trump wants to do business with the man who grabbed Crimea from Ukraine and whose political opponents have a way of ending up dead.

It used to be that Republicans automatically voted for the candidate who was tough on Russia. They wanted someone the Kremlin would have to talk to and would do so with respect. Someone experienced in  diplomacy whose word could be counted on by friend and foe alike. That would be Hillary, not Donald. Donald, who doesn’t know Crimea from Korea, wants to sell out NATO and maybe get a hotel deal in the bargain. Putin has played him — and his followers — perfectly, from the hacked Clinton e-mails to the threat of war. Trump’s entire campaign is based on fear. That’s no way for America to negotiate with Putin, or any other world leader. …

I stopped there, wondering whether to go on. Then Trump said in the last debate that he wouldn’t necessarily accept the results of the election if he lost. That’s when I threw in the towel. For a man who has promoted violence at his rallies and some of whose supporters have openly espoused rebelling against any defeat, this is as unacceptable, unpatriotic, indefensible, possibly treasonous a statement as a candidate for president can make.

But that’s Trump — a new bottom every day. His fans cheered. I do not blame him for being who he is; I simply detest him. In truth, I’m sick of him. I do, however, blame the Republican Party for infecting American society (not just politics) with this utterly degrading election campaign. I mean every elected Republican official, from Speaker Paul Ryan to every governor, senator, congressperson, state legislator, county executive, county legislator, mayor, supervisor, councilman who has stood silently by and let Trump make a mockery of our democratic system and lay waste to any sense of decency or decorum in selection of the most powerful political leader on the planet.

A lot of these people went to Cleveland to vote for Trump. Then they stayed mute for months as he … okay, I said I’m not doing that anymore. The world knows what he has done. If you know all that and can still support him, words actually fail me. The same goes for those who say Hillary is just as bad. Not even close. You people need to get serious.

Republicans, Trump is not one of you. He is Trump. Period. You created him. Your hypocrisy and cowardice have emboldened him and his ilk. He has sullied us all. And he has destroyed you.

Democrats’ shopping list for coming elections. Unsolicited.

    Back two or three lifetimes ago, being between newspaper jobs and hobbling around downtown Annapolis on crutches as the result of a touch football accident, I spent some time answering phones and making phone calls for the Democratic Party. It was primary season and someone whose name I can’t recall thought it would be a good way to spend some time and use my journalist’s familiarity with politics. Drinking may have been involved.

     It was 1976. Joe Tydings, scion of a prominent Maryland family, was trying to get back to the Senate and Governor Moonbeam — Jerry Brown of California — was running for president. Or dating Linda Ronstadt. Or both.

   Tydings lost the primary to Rep. Paul Sarbanes, who went on to serve five terms. Brown carried Maryland, but lost nationally to a peanut farmer from Georgia. That farmer, Jimmy Carter, then beat the accidental president, Gerald Ford, in the general election, but later ran into Ronald Reagan and the Iran hostages crisis, serving only one term.

    I reminisce about this history and these less than happy days in reaction to a mailing from the Democratic National Committee (one of many I have received) asking me, as a Democrat, to fill out a survey to help them prepare an agenda to fight Donald Trump and the Republicans. 

   While it’s good to know that someone is thinking about these things, let me be clear: I am not now and have never been a member of the Democratic, or for that matter, Republican, Socialist, Liberal, Conservative, Libertarian or Communist Party. Being registered in a political party doesn’t mesh with writing about politics for newspapers. My time answering phones in Annapolis may have filled a void, but I never joined the party.

    So DNC, I won’t be returning the survey or making any donation. I get it that it takes a lot of money to run political campaigns, but I will limit my contribution to giving (since you asked) my two cents on what Democrats should do to rid this country of Trump and the brain dead Republican Party.

    In essence, all of the above on your survey. That is, virtually everything suggested makes sense to some extent. Except for one.

    Under ranking of priorities, one item states: “Persuading voters who did not vote for Democrats in 2022 and 2024.”

     Save your breath, folks. These people knew Trump-the-terrible from the first time, enjoyed the rewards of Joe Biden’s economic agenda and still didn’t vote for Democrats. Ten years and counting of Trump Republicanism.

   If they were alive and breathing in 2022 and 2024 and voted for the party of anything Trump says is Ok, they are either too dumb to figure it out or they agree with the feed-the-rich, starve the non-white, non-Christian agenda of the Republican Party.

    Look, there are MAGA Trumpers who don’t even care that their leader raped young girls with Jeffrey Epstein, stole money from a phony kids cancer charity, sexually asssulted a woman in a clothing store dressing room on Fifth Avenue, promised a wall to stop the flow of immigrants from Mexico but delivered roaming bands of violent, masked kidnappers instead, and pardoned all those who followed his direction and laid waste to the U.S. Capitol when he told them the 2020 election was stolen from him.

    I could go on, but you get the idea. If they didn’t see or care about the difference between Democrats and Republicans two years ago, they likely still feel the same today or they are too embarrassed to admit they were wrong. Too iffy.

    Better to “engage,” as you say, those who didn’t bother to vote in 2022 and 2024. The ones who say all politicians are the same, so they don’t pay attention to politics. Or vote. They may be sorry they ignored their privilege and their duty.

    If the cost of groceries today, disappearance of jobs, violent ICE raids locally, illegal destruction of the East Wing of the White House and the total humiliation of the U.S. on the international stage with a president who “ends” dozens of wars except for the real one in Ukraine (“Day One”, remember?), rambles incoherently, insults longtime allies and falls asleep at meetings don’t persuade them that not all politicians are the same, nothing probably will. But it’s definitely worth a shot.

    So, yes, by all means work to win back the Congress this year and the presidency in 2028. Talk about the Epstein files every day. Go to court. And talk about Republicans’ shameful duplicity and cowardice with regard to Trump at every level of government. Every day.

    An unknown peanut farmer from Georgia beat the guy who inherited the Watergate mess from Richard Nixon in 1976. That mess pales by comparison with the grift Trump has been performing on Americans for a decade. Clean it up, please.

   As a lifetime independent voter, that’s what I think you Democrats should do.

Epstein survivors stand as Attorney General Pam Bondi refuses to acknowledge them.

  If a picture is truly worth a thousand words, then a recent photo taken of Pam Bondi is priceless. The photo, which accompanies this column, encapsulates in one moment the very essence of the woman. Pure evil.

  Bondi’s hysterical, theatrical performance before a committee of Congress seeking full release of the FBI’s files on Jeffrey Epstein has been thoroughly covered by all media sources and her refusal to answer questions in favor of insulting members of Congress well-documented. It was likely the worst appearance ever by any United States Attorney General before a congressional committee. It should have been an embarrassment for her and her boss, Donald Trump.

  But I doubt that it was. The photo sealed the deal. Near the end of the three-hour ordeal of Bondi defending the Justice Department handling of the files by scowling, smirking and shrieking at committee members — she called Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) a “washed-up loser lawyer” and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) a “failed politician” — Rep. Pramila Jayapal ( D-Wash.) asked Bondi to turn around and personally apologize to the survivors who attended the meeting for the manner in which her department has handled the files.

    Bondi refused. She turned her head away from the survivors and said, “I am not going to get in the gutter for her theatrics.“

  When Jayapal asked the survivors to stand and raise their hands if they had not yet been granted a meeting with the Justice Department to share their stories, all nine survivors in the room stood and raised their hands, as did two family members of the late Virginia Giuffre, who committed suicide.

    There’s your photo. The survivors standing and staring at Bondi as she sits, clutching her playbook, looking the other way with her best privileged school girl face. Mission accomplished. She was unable to display even the slightest modicum of compassion, to face them as a woman, if not the attorney general, and express sadness for the pain and suffering they have endured.

    Nothing.

Kaitlin Collins and Donald Trump

   There’s something that’s been baffling me for years and it was brought to my attention again this morning by two unrelated news stories: Donald Trump and the women who support him.

   I don’t get it. I admit it. And I would welcome any women readers’ attempts to explain it to me.

    One story, the one getting all the headlines, concerned an exchange between Trump and CNN reporter Kaitlin Collins at a press conference in the Oval Office. Collins was pressing Trump about what he might say to survivors of the Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking operation who feel they have not received justice.

    Trump, whose name appears thousands of times in the recently released Epstein files, did what he typically does with a female reporter — he insulted her.

    He called her the “worst reporter” and then said, “l don’t think I’ve ever seen you smile. You know why you’re not smiling? Because you know you’re not telling the truth.”

     Collins didn’t take the bait, but kept pressing for an answer that never came. Trump, of course, had previously called a female reporter “piggy“ for daring to bring up the same subject.

    The other story I just happened to come upon while glancing over old copies of the New York Times that I was preparing to toss in the recycling can. It was the typical overlong Times profile of a young woman, Andrea Lucas, whom Trump has made chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

   Her job, as with practically everyone else Trump named to head a government agency or department appears to be to make it unnecessary.

   In a nutshell, she says she wants to remake the image of the commission in Trump’s vision of workplace discrimination. No diversity, no equity, no inclusion for those discriminated against in the past, because young white males are having difficulty finding jobs and, if that’s the case, they should report it to her because they might be entitled to some compensation. (That might also explain the surge of interest for jobs in ICE.)

    How can she do this? I asked myself. How can she support this man? Is she not aware of the struggle women have fought for decades to gain respect in the business world? To even have the right to vote? To have the right to make decisions about their own bodies? Heck, for her to even hold the job she has.

    And even more to the point here, how can she do this when every sane person of reasonable intelligence in the entire world knows that Trump was fully immersed in the Epstein sex-trafficking of young teenage girls? Rape.

     How can she — and I look at the history here — fully support a man who cheated on his first wife with his second wife and cheated on his second wife with his third wife? Who cheated on his third wife while she was taking care of their newly born son? Who tried to cover up that cheating (with a porn star) and was subsequently convicted of four felony counts? Who, in a civil trial, was adjudicated liable and ordered to pay millions of dollars for sexual assault and defamation of character in what a judge called rape for his attack on a female journalist, yes, in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

   How? How do you look at a man like this, smile, nod and say, yes sir, never heard of Jeffrey Epstein, when you’re a woman?

    How does Pam Bondi do it? Kristi Noem? Karoline Leavitt? Tulsi Gabbard? Linda McMahon (Education), Brooke Rollins (Agriculture), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (Labor), and Susie Wiles, chief of staff?

      I’m stumped, angry and saddened by this allegiance to a man who the recently released trove of files show Epstein referring to him as “the worst person” he’s ever known.

       That’s it. That’s what I don’t get. Maybe it’s as simple as being a man and not a woman, but I’d really appreciate it if some women readers could share some thoughts with me on this.

But Captain, they’re free, as is Greenland to be sure.

They likely won’t welcome our ships on their shore.

   “No matter, we’ll lower their tariffs and promise 

them chips. They’ll gladly welcome (huff, puff) our ships.

Our moguls are angry, the market took a dip

   all because of Iceland. Is that a Coke?

Give me a sip.”

  “Look, I told them at Davos I’d buy Greenland,

or maybe Iceland,

Or some big island, I think.

      Not to worry.

But I’m getting old and I’m in a bit of a hurry.”

  “If I can give them Greenland or Iceland to feather their nest, they’ll give me more goodies

and I’ll be forever remembered

As the best of the best.”

“Abi gezunt” is a Yiddish phrase meaning “As long as you’re healthy.” It is used to downplay problems.

  As an old tabloid journalist, I’m a fan of short headlines that tell the story without beating around the bush. One of the most famous was a Daily News front page from 50 years ago that screamed: “Ford to New York: Drop Dead!”

  President Gerald Ford had refused to help the city out of some financial difficulties and the city’s leading morning daily had made the message clear. 

  A few days back, another story involving a president spurred a headline in my tabloid-programmed brain: Ford to factory worker: Shut up!

   No, you never saw it.

   The president was Trump and the Ford in this case was the automaker that was one of the proud founders of the American industrial empire, Ford Motor Company.

  As you’ve undoubtedly learned via social media by now, as Trump was touring a Ford plant in Dearborn, Michigan, posing for pictures and making smiling men in suits happy, a worker called out “Pedophile protector!” at the man who is protecting pedophiles by still refusing to release the full Epstein files as Congress specifically voted. 

   Trump, with the emotional maturity of a not very bright 12-year-old boy, responded by saying “F*#k You!” twice and giving the man the middle finger. Crude. The kind of stuff that makes an impression on the schoolyard, but is not especially presidential and certainly not dignified. Like accepting a Nobel Peace Prize that doesn’t belong to you, as I wrote about the other day. At least he’s consistent.

    Well, the press managed to cover the story, carefully, and Ford, which sponsored the visit by Trump without coordinating with the United Autoworkers Union, responded by suspending the worker, TJ Sabula.

    Social media covered the story much more directly, noting the American citizen expressing his free speech, the American president reacting boorishly, the union saying free speech is supposed to be protected and, eventually, lawyers saying that protection unfortunately doesn’t apply to private employers, but rather to the government.

    A Go Fund Me site started for Sabula, who has not regretted his remark, has reportedly raised more than half a million dollars for him already, which tells you where America stands on speaking truth to power. The Ford Company, which obviously invited Trump to flatter him and work out some deal, is still mum on further action on Sabula. The unredacted Epstein files have still not been released, although the congressionally set deadline was last December 19. The White House defended Trump’s reactions as “appropriate.”

    And, Trump has never denied the charge hurled at him on the factory floor: Pedophile protector! He just hurled an F-bomb — twice — and hoisted an arthritic middle finger, demonstrating once again to the world the embarrassment that he and his cowardly enablers in the Republican Party have inflicted on this once-proud nation.

I spent a surprisingly relaxing five minutes the other night listening to Marjorie Taylor Greene on YouTube. Yeah sure, I’ll repeat it. I spent a surprisingly relaxing five minutes the other night listening to Marjorie Taylor Greene on YouTube.

Believe me, I’m as surprised as you are. But it’s true.

The onetime MAGA maniac, who helped lead the Republican Party kicking and screaming (her, not the GOP regulars) into the cult of Trump, sat calmly and quietly, almost demurely, staring into the camera telling us about how she had been wrong to trust Trump and was disenchanted with politics because the people in it aren’t really there to serve the public. That is why she resigned from Congress, she said.

In and of itself, I wouldn’t buy that as her reason for quitting. She knew what the game was like and how to play as dirty as the next guy. But she was talking about the Epstein files and Trump and the victims whose stories of sexual assault she had heard in closed-door sessions and Trump’s reneging on his promise to release the files once elected and his continuing disregard of Congress’s official demand for release of the entire, unredacted files and about a phone call she said she got from Trump, because of her insistence on making the files public. She was talking about all that.

She said Trump called her office and said the files could not be released because people he knew would get hurt. Not that he would get hurt. People he knew. Read between the lines.

Greene said she put the call on speakerphone so her whole staff could hear it. She’s obviously serious about this and wants as many witnesses as possible.

I have no idea why, after all the Trump insanity, this is the issue that caused Greene to see the light, brought her a moment of clarity. I suspect, as with other Republican women in Congress who have pushed for release of the files, it’s highly personal.

Whatever the reason, and as delayed as this change of heart may be, I welcome it because she speaks to and for a lot of the MAGA crowd.

She may even have given some of her male colleagues in the Republican Party the courage to defy their leader on other issues. The House passed an extension to the Obamacare subsidies, despite Trump‘s opposition. The Senate finally declared Trump had no right to go to war against Venezuela or any other country without consulting Congress. Some Republicans called Trump‘s threats about taking Greenland reckless.

I don’t know if they’re all connected, but they are all deviations from the previous Republican norm regarding Trump — quiet obedience.

So I welcome Greene’s calm persistence in going after full release of the unredacted Epstein files as opposed to the Republican committee chair following Trump’s orders and focusing only on Democrats. And hey, if Bill Clinton’s in there, so be it.

I may be looking for something that’s not there. That’s the kind of world we live in today. But I had a surprisingly relaxing five minutes listening to Marjorie Taylor Greene the other night and I think that means something.

Donald Trump and Nicolas Maduro (kidnapped)

   Be careful what you wish for.

   After a few days of reminiscing about Christmases past and pondering the year to come, of musing about the choices and chances of survival of once seemingly stalwart Trumpers Elise Stefanik and Susie Wiles, I woke up on your regular Saturday, January 3, 2026, wondering what the man himself, the beneficiary of the first ever FIFA Peace Prize, would give me to write about.

     War.

      I should have known.

      This won’t take long. What you’re going to read here is likely to be pretty much what you read elsewhere because there’s only one way for rational, law-abiding citizens of our system of government with its separation of powers spelled out in a Constitution to look at it: Invading Venezuela and kidnapping its president and his wife/adviser with no legitimate provocation and without consulting Congress is an illegitimate act of war.

     The nonsense about Venezuela being a primary source of Fentanyl coming into this country is just that, nonsense. This is all about oil. Always has been. Gaining control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves. Wait to see which of Trump’s wealthy backers benefit.

      That Nicolas Maduro was a much-hated dictator does not justify attacking Venezuela and looking to change the government with no request for intervention and the claim that he was in fact a major drug dealer himself for allowing the drug trade to continue is sheer nonsense when one considers the actual major drug dealers Trump has pardoned.

     Trump says we’re going to “run” Venezuela for a while. Why? They have a new president — the former Vice President. Trump says Maduro is going to be charged with drug charges in New York. There are international courts.

      Then there’s the fact that China and Russia both get a lot of oil from Venezuela and our seizing the country to make up for losing control of its oil fields when they were nationalized seems to give China an argument for taking back Taiwan and its wealth and Russia invading Ukraine for its. Same authoritarian playbook.

    Illegal. Dangerous. Foolhardy. Unwanted and unwarranted. If you believe what we tell the world, unAmerican.

   Americans don’t want this. Congress must step in. Republicans must finally find the courage to do their job. He is out of control.

    The Epstein files are still out there. Trump’s name is all over them. War is a powerful distraction. Frightened and unchecked, he will only get worse. It’s only January 3rd.

Footnote: The plane carrying Maduro and his wife apparently landed at Stewart Airport in Orange County, my neighborhood and a short ride to New York City. When the hostages from Iran landed there, it was a much more joyous event,

You can tell a lot about people by the way they speak, their choice of words.

Donald Trump has told us he has “the best words”. He has also demonstrated on many occasions that he is willing to use a lot of them in succession to no meaningful message. This suggests, at least superficially, that he is superficial, pretending to be what he is not or, worse, that he is not pretending but really believes what he says about magnets and windmills and shopping at grocery stores.

But this week he gave us a look inside the real man with just four words:

— “Quiet Piggy!”

— “Things happen.”

They were uttered on two separate occasions, both times to female journalists with whom Trump was more than a bit annoyed. Each had dared to ask the important question of the moment, in public and in front of witnesses.

Trump can’t handle this approach. He either explodes, as in the first case, or he lies, as in the second. Both replies were pathetically inappropriate, infuriating and embarrassing for having been uttered by the person occupying the office of President of the United States.

But then, that’s what we’ve come to expect — and far too many still accept — from Trump.

The “Quiet Piggy!” insult was directed at Catherine Lucey of Bloomberg News last Friday aboard Air Force One. As part of a group of reporters, she was asking him why he had not yet released the Jeffrey Epstein files.

“Quiet!” Trump barked. “Quiet Piggy.”

Trump’s well-documented misogynist attitude towards women in a nutshell. If they’re too smart and not appropriately deferential, insult their appearance. He’s done it before. Pathetic.

The “Things happen” remark was his nonchalant dismissal of Mary Bruce of ABC News who was asking Mohammad bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, about the killing and dismemberment of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

Khashoggi had written articles critical of the ruling Saudi family and the CIA concluded that the prince now sitting next to Trump in the Oval Office had ordered the murder.

No matter to Trump, whose family has several financial deals in the works with the Saudis. He said the prince knew nothing about the killing and scolded the reporter for asking an embarrassing question of “our guest.“

“A lot of people didn’t like the gentleman that you’re talking about,” Trump said. “Whether you like him or didn’t like him, things happen.”

Things happen. Death by dismemberment. The body parts placed in acid. No biggie. A journalist working for an American newspaper. A murder condemned around the world as an attack on the free press. The CIA says the “friend“ sitting next to Trump gave the order. Trump blamed the victim and called the question “insubordinate,” as if the reporter worked for him. He also called her a terrible reporter working for a terrible company and wondered about lifting their license, which is par for the course.

It’s difficult to try to come up with new ways to describe what an insult Trump is to the presidency and what a stain he is leaving on the idea of American democracy. Forget American exceptionalism.

And yes, as an American and a journalist, I do take this personally. I have lived through the presidencies of FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr., Obama and Biden without ever feeling that any of them, faults though they may have had and policies with which I may have disagreed, had so little regard for what the office of president stands for to the average American. Even Nixon. He had the decency to resign.

Decency is not included in Trump‘s “best words” vocabulary.

Maybe the Epstein thing will finally get this little piggy. Hey, things happen.

— He is tearing down the East Wing of the White House, after saying he would not, to build a garish ballroom. Republicans say nothing.

— He is using our military to murder people on the high seas, in the name of fighting drugs, with no evidence offered of any wrongdoing. Republicans say nothing.

— He is using ICE as a  violent private army to kidnap people off the streets of American cities in the guise of fighting illegal immigration, locking them up in private prisons with no charges filed or sending them to other countries. Republicans say nothing.

— He is three weeks into a government shutdown, with federal employees going unpaid and services curtailed, having made no attempt to reach a budget compromise with Democrats. Republicans say nothing.

— He has scared House Speaker Mike Johnson into keeping the House out of session to work on a budget that will not cause millions of Americans to lose their health insurance because that would also require Johnson to swear in a new Democratic representative, who would be a deciding vote to require release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, which are believed to contain the names of prominent figures (including his) involved in a worldwide sex-trafficking scandal involving teenaged girls. Three Republicans complained.

— He has ordered federal prosecution of persons who he feels have disrespected him in word, in print or in court, offering none or flimsy excuses for evidence of wrongdoing. An enemies list. Republicans say nothing.

— He is ordering the National Guard into American cities governed by Democrats, over the opposition of governors,  while claiming crime is rampant when it is not and ignoring judicial rulings to cease. The Guardsmen are used as stage props. Republicans say nothing.

— He is suing the news media for daring to report the truth and seeking exorbitant sums to settle the suits as a way of silencing the press. Republicans say nothing.

— He is demanding payments from colleges for admission policies and courses which recognize the wide spectrum of people living in this country, as well as its history. Republicans say nothing.

— He is asking the Justice Department, which he has seeded with sycophants and lackeys and inexperienced lawyers, to pay him $230 million restitution for being the subject of several investigations and indictments, which ceased when he became president. Republicans say nothing.

— He has made enemies of America’s traditional allies, such as NATO, Canada and Mexico, through insults and accusations, while cozying up to Vladimir Putin of Russia and other authoritarian leaders. Republicans say nothing.

— He has filled his cabinet with the worst collection of incompetent, publicity seeking misfits in the history of the country. Planes are colliding; people are getting measles again. Republicans say nothing.

— He has played games with tariffs, imposing and threatening huge ones against various countries, disrupting trade, raising the price on imported goods, increasing supermarket shopping costs and causing hardship to farmers already hurting because of the kidnapping of their workers and undoubtedly resulting in profits to family and close associates who know ahead of time when he’s going to change his mind on a tariff and cause some stock to soar or sink because of his illegal market manipulation. Republicans say nothing.

— He pardoned the January 6 rioters, who lay waste to the nation’s Capitol over his false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him. Republicans say nothing.

— He has hawked watches, sneakers, bitcoin and coins with his name on it, held invitation-only dinners for ultra-wealthy influence seekers and accepted a jet from Qatar, which will cost a fortune to refurbish to use as president and as his personal aircraft in civilian life, all in violation of the law forbidding the office holder from profiting off the presidency. Republicans say nothing.

— He is talking about having a coin minted with his image on it (illegal) and maybe building a triumphal arch honoring him in Washington, D.C. Republicans say nothing.

— He acknowledged the No Kings Day demonstrations, as more than 7 million Americans took to the streets for peaceful protest against all of the above, with a social media post using an AI-generated video showing him as a royal ruler flying over the demonstrators and defecating on them. I repeat: Defecating on them. American citizens. Mikey Johnson called it “satire.” Other Republicans say nothing.

— He plays golf virtually every weekend, displays no working knowledge of math, science, history or how government works, lacks empathy, can’t remember who’s the leader of which country, is unable to give a speech without descending into disconnected sentences of self-glorification and lies about virtually everything, including being shot. Republicans say nothing.

   OK, that’s it. I’m exhausted and that’s only off the top of my head without doing any research.

   Here’s the point: There are elections coming up very soon for state, county, town  and city officials across the country. I have been an independent voter my entire adult life. I voted for whomever I thought was the best candidate for the job. The last few years, my decisions have been simplified. I simply vote for the Democrat. Or, put another way, I never vote for the Republican.

      They have sat by, mostly silently, while this man has laid a wrecking ball to our nation. To our ideals. To our reputation. To our heritage. To our sense of community. To our self-respect.

   Whether it be out of fear or pure complicity, at this point it doesn’t matter anymore. Their silence defines them. They are him.

   I will vote for and/or publicly commend the first local Republican official whom I am aware of speaking critically of him publicly. But it’s been 10 years and I’m still waiting. And I’m not holding my breath.

    Republicans need not say anything.
