“President Palin.” Scared?
The old line about everyone’s having the chance to be president is really beginning to worry me. Does it include Sarah Palin? She’s behaving like it does. She travels around the country, speaks before big audiences, avoids the press, recently hired a political consultant, and has a loyal following of people in the Tea Party movement who think she’s just pretty darned terrific, don’t you know.
But fun time is over and it’s important to draw the line, and pronounce that if you don’t really have a grasp of what’s going on in the world, well, then, no, you can’t be president.
My distress was brought on by a Palin quote that’s making its way through the Internet. In case you missed it, Palin was sitting for an interview by David Brody, the Washington bureau chief of the Christian Broadcasting Network. The subject was Egypt. Here’s what Palin had to say at one point in her talk with Brody:
“It’s a difficult situation. This is that 3 a.m. White House phone call and it seems for many of us trying to get that information from our leader in the White House, it seems that that call went right to the answering machine. And nobody yet has explained to the American public what they know, and surely they know more than the rest of us know, who it is who will be taking the place of Mubarak. And no, not, not real enthused about what it is that is being done on a national level from D.C. in regards to understanding all the situation there in Egypt and in in these areas that are so volatile right now, because obviously it’s not just Egypt, but the other countries, too, where we are seeing uprisings. We know that, now more than ever, we need strength and sound mind there in the White House. We need to know what it is that America stands for, so we know who it is that America will stand with. And we do not have all that information yet.”
I must note right here that I have seen other versions of this response in which the punctuation has been skewed to make look like a moron. But the quote above is taken directly from her CBN interview as shown on YouTube.
It’s time to end the Palin fun and games. I’m waiting for some honest, intelligent, America-loving Republicans to take their party back and inform Palin: No, Sarah, you can’t be president.

No one can make her sound more like an idiot than she can all by herself.

From your lips to god’s ears! And Egypt is a double-edged sword – no pun intended – for the tighty righties. Do they believe in democracy for all or just not in the middle east because we may not like the Arabian choices.

Carol, I think you’re right. The thing about Palin: She’s just so darned good — don’t you know — at sounding like an idiot.
Hi Jo, I think it’s a case of Old American Diplomacy: What’s good for us is good for the world. Recall Hiroshima. Too bad for Washington that a lot of people don’t happen to agree.

We might recall that U.S. governments of both strips supported Mubarek for 30 years, giving his regime plenty of money, weapons, and training (torture, anyone?) so he could suppress his own people. If some of them are a bit angry with us, why are we surprised? I also read recently that the CIA had once given support to the Muslim Brotherhood. How many times do we help out people who turn on us later? We could use a more effective foreign policy, or even just shut up and butt out.

Oops. I meant to say “stripes” intead of “strips” above. I think.

Thanks, Mary. I think it’s an old story. Who was it (Churchill?) who said nations do not have friends, they have interests.

Sarah Palin would scare me if she were not so stupid. Maybe she can see Russia from her house, but not the White House. Her only useful function in my opinionated opinion is to make Obama’s re-election easier. I am usually a very strong supporter of women running for office, but I always require that they have a brain. Can anyone imagine what her foreign policy would look like in the current situation in the Middle East? Nice work as always, Jeffrey.

Thanks Marcia. I think Palin is trying to establish herself as the Republicans’ National Scold, thinking that if she goes “tsk tsk” often enough, there would be a groundwell in her favor. I think she’s wrong. I think the Ameriocan people are too smart to be hoodwinked by her. Still, when I see a Palin quote like that one about the situation in the Middle East, I get concerned and wonder — What if?

Is she any kin to Michael Palin of the Monty Python troop. she could easily pass qualification tests. While she is better looking than most of the Monty Pythoneers, her humor seems a little off the wall, a little too madcap, a little too surreal to be funny. what do you think?

Jeff,
Oy vey! Your article comes on the heels of a coupla of bumper stickers I saw on a truck yesterday as I was pulling out of Price Chopper’s parking lot in Warwick yesterday: PALIN FOR PRESIDENT/BECK FOR VICE-PRESIDENT juxtaposed with WHERE’S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
