TIPPIE - April 4, 2001 - May 29, 2012

IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We’ve had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You’d not want me to suffer so;
The time has come — please let me go.

Take me where my need they’ll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved.

Please do not grieve — it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We’ve been so close, we two, these years;
Don’t let your heart hold back its tears.

    Rich, I’m so sorry to read the news about Tippi. That was some dog and I hope that some day soon you’ll write about how you and Tippi first met. That was some story. See you soon.

    So Sorry for your loss, if only humans were as accepting of the end as animals are. Enjoy the memories and Tippie’s spirit.

    Dear Rich,

    I’m truly sorry to hear about your dog, Tippie. What a beautiful photograph you have to remember her by! (I keep pictures of my Airedale, Lily, on my screen saver, although none so magnificent as the one you took of Tippie. Seeing Lily’s image materialize on the screen from time to time always makes me feel closer to her – although it still makes me cry sometimes.)

    All of us who have ever loved an animal are with you today, in our hearts.

    Beautiful photo and touching poem, Rich. Our lives are enriched when we share such a love with these noble friends and our hearts break when our time together comes to an end.
